BEVENDEAN MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT, BRIGHTON
MW were invited to collaborate on a design for a mixed use development in the Bevendean area of Brighton. The scheme consists of a block of new affordable housing units, sat alongside an enlarged and upgraded mechanic's garage, in place of a pair of existing dilapidated buildings on the site - the existing garage and a 1960s bungalow.
The plot represents significant challenges due to it's steep topography and close proximity to neighbouring houses, but also provides an opportunity to make better use of the site and densify the area. Another challenge is to successfully separate the two main functions of the building - the garage and the housing units, to prevent noise and other pollutants affecting future residents. As such, the aim is create a typology which blends building functions to create a mixed-use form of architecture. This will help save valuable space in urban areas and produce more diverse and productive spaces in towns and cities. The materiality emulates the character of the area, using a mix of brick and painted render, whilst the roof structure will be clad with tile-hung terracotta roof riles. The form of the building steps in height to suit the topography of the site, and splays in plan to visually connect the neighbouring terraced houses with the houses at the top of the hill. This project is in the process of being submitted for planning approval. |
