MEWS HOUSE IN HITHER GREEN, LONDON
We have been working on a project to rework and extend a quirky mews house for a young couple in Hither Green, south-east London. Although small in footprint, the house benefits from a large living space with courtyard garden at the rear and two bedrooms on the first floor. However, the home is entered from the side street directly into the living room and the spaces feel quite dark due to a lack of windows. Furthermore, the existing kitchen is housed in a small rear extension which is of a poor build quality and feels cramped.
Our brief with the client has been to find solutions to maximise and revamp the living spaces in a contemporary style, whilst allowing more daylight into the centre of the house. An existing outdoor store cupboard next to the main entrance will be removed and a new hall with storage and a bench will provide a threshold into the home. The main intervention will be a new rear extension in place of the existing dilapidated kitchen development. This will house an upgraded kitchen with a new dining space to one side and will allow much more light into the plan of the building due to the proposed large windows, glazed doors and rooflights. The main material palette will be treated oak, plywood and a brick treatment to the side walls and the renovated courtyard paving to match the existing context. The interior will be a mix of timber flooring and a new replacement terrazzo floor in the living room. Lastly, a new widened plywood staircase will replace the existing stairs with built in cat furniture making use of the leftover space underneath. The rear extension has been designed to fit within permitted development constraints and we have recieved lawful development status from Lewisham Council. A second phase of the project has also been mooted in the future to design a dormer roof extension over the bathroom on the first floor to provide extra headroom. |
